Confide – Recover
June 3rd, 2010
Los Angeles’ own CONFIDE are back with their sophomore attempt, Recover, an album that shows that with time comes maturity. Lyrically, Confide stays true to their nature, giving us a detailed view into the lost hope, betrayal, and conflict within their minds.
The album opens up with the first track ‘When Heaven Is Silent’, a song with uplifting melodies, driving guitars, and a breakdown to get the pit going. As vocalist Ross Kenyon sings: ‘You’re as close to me as I will let you be.’ you can hear how heartfelt it really is.
The album then breaks into the first single ‘Tighten It Up’ with Ross pleading ‘I can’t stop, don’t tell me to stop now. I’m going, I’m leaving for you.’ The song hits like a wrecking ball while still being catchy enough to keep you humming it to yourself for days.
One of my personal favorites is the sixth track, ‘My Choice Of Words’. Lyrically, this song strays from Confide’s path a little bit. Rather than focusing on inner conflict, it is much more aggressive and straightforward. The song opens with a breakdown that bursts into an infectious chorus, only to be thrown into another breakdown.
Barely Breathing is an incredibly self-empowering song. Vocally, the tone and delivery is different in this song than throughout the album, giving this song a very unique feel, that suits the lyrical theme perfectly.
Overall the album is incredibly solid. The only fault the album seems to have is a lack of base that follows throughout. Each song sounds like it could be a single, but perhaps that’s not much of a fault because it gives more variation to keep the album fresh.

Spring Time in Venice Demos
Unsigned
Unsigned Australian act VANSTORM has finally released their debut demo “Spring Time in Venice.” Fueled by driving guitars and awesome electronica, this party screamo band will have you singing along to the clean vocals that are almost reminiscent of Enter Shikari. Front man Joey’s amazingly unique screams are a breath of fresh air in this scene dominated by bland vocals.
The EP starts out with the “Secret Kick Of Death” that introduces you to the album with light synths to guitars leading you into the song, and you’re quickly thrown into the party. Driving guitars along with “You scream in the night! Hold your tongue!” just makes you wanna get into the pit and 2-step with the best of ‘em. Along with an electronic break, there is a devastating breakdown at the end that’ll make you fist pump so hard you may want to watch for your neighbors.
The next song, “The Bi-Curious Case of Benjamin Balls,” really showcases the diversity of the band. Heavy guitars, along with Joey’s screams, driving the beginning of “We Are The Kings Of The Night!” will make everyone join together until the instrumentals break and the band really shows off their stuff. With guitar runs, intense drumming, then the almost punk-like verse into the gang vocals, this song just really shows how diverse the band can be in the genres they play while still sounding unique.
“The Ninja Song” really shows how strong a tool electronica can be in this genre, making perfect segways between the verses and chorus, then into the breakdown leading you home into the chorus again. This song ends the demo in a perfect union of gang vocals, uplifting electronics, ear-caressing guitars and the ultimate question: “Why are we left here living alone without a soul?”
Make sure to check them out on their MySpace, Facebook, or Twitter and be on the lookout for their EP sometime later this year! Just think, if they can give us all of this in only a demo, what does the future hold for this band that’s set out to show us a good time?
UnderØath and Drummer/Singer Aaron Gillespie Part Ways

Dose of Adolescence – Memories Attack
March 27th, 2010Dose of Adolescence
Memories Attack
Stay Gold Group
March 23rd, 2010
Breathing a dose of fresh air back into Punk Rock, Dose of Adolescence from Cucamonga, CA, is here with their debut album “Memories Attack”. This album really dives back into the punk-rock roots that have influenced a lot of the music we have come to enjoy now. Starting out the album is a slow guitar part that throws you into the track “I’m Rad, You’re Rad, It’s Been Fun”. Hearing this song you can imagine how the live setting would look with the circle pit and dancers alongside, as this song has its punk vocals, the catchy as hell chorus, and a perfectly placed guitar solo.
Jumping into “Flight 1200 Departed”, we can hear the bands we
all used to love, reminiscent of “Page Avenue” era Story of the Year, or “Last Train Home” Lost Prophets. The only thing difference is they just have that edge to their music that makes them stand out in this day and age. The song drives, making you want to move along and shout the choruses at the top of your lungs. Let alone the fact that I had trouble finishing the rest of this review, not because the album is bad, in any way shape or form, but
because I had this song stuck on replay for about an hour.
“Never Ever Land” is surely a stand out track. It definitely
encompasses vocalist Jimmy Ray Brown Jr.’s vocals. During the choruses and
most of the verses, instead of the harsh punk vocals, his voice is actually
very soothing. This is a nice change compared to the rest of the tracks.
Then the song turns around and he screams in your face “THIS IS ALL WE’VE
GOT!!! Where will we be tomorrow?!” It’s such a perfect transition and high
point of the song.
Another stand out song is “85 to 06 (You’re So Dearly Missed)”. This
song is a dedication to their friend that they lost a few years ago. I
figured I would put a mention of the song in here because it is so
emotional. I believe that you need to hear this song for your own to be able
to understand what I cannot explain through words. This song is very moving.
I think the best part about this album is that it doesn’t fall into
under a generic styling. They manage to keep the instrumentals ever changing
throughout. They keep the drums driving, the bass lines move to the
melodies, and not to mention a few guitar solos and sweeps that just jump
out at you. This is certainly an album you have to pick up to be able to
completely absorb it.
You can give the full album a listen here at they MySpace while it’s still streaming before you go buy it.
